Montgomery Middle School to Celebrate New Genius Lab and Partnership With Siemens

WHAT: Montgomery Middle School will officially launch its new Genius Lab, a high-tech makerspace developed with support from Siemens. The new lab is outfitted with modern modular furniture, collaborative learning spaces, multiple 3-D printers, a Maker Bot Replicator, laser cutter, vinyl cutter, and other state-of-the-art computer equipment used in the tech field and throughout the STEAM industries.

Siemens donated some of the equipment and provided specialized, student-centered FUSE training at Northwestern University for the Montgomery engineering teacher and principal.

WHEN: Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018, 9:30 to 11 a.m.

WHERE: Montgomery Middle School, 2470 Ulric St., 92111

DETAILS:

* 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. Student demonstrations from: Kearny High School robotics team, Montgomery Middle School engineering students, and Linda Vista Elementary School fourth-grade STEAM students.

* 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. Speakers: San Diego Unified Superintendent Cindy Marten; San Diego School Board Vice President Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne; Cesar Solis, Education Field Representative for Rep. Scott Peters; John DeMaio, Building Performance and Sustainability General Manager at Siemens

* 10:30 to 11 a.m. Additional student demonstrations inside the Genius Lab

BACKGROUND:

The purpose of the makerspace is to provide a collaborative work environment on campus designed to introduce San Diego Unified students to the process of making, building, creating, and innovating. The space is designed with industry in mind; by doing so, we hope to introduce students to 21st century careers in industry and technology.

The layout of the classroom reflects ideas from similar spaces in some of the hallmark companies of our time. With an open, clean, dynamic, and flexible layout, the makerspace will promote those same ideas in the work of the students in the classroom.

Students at Montgomery Middle and throughout the Kearny Cluster have the opportunity to experience a STEAM education at all levels. It's one of several clusters in the district that provide students with a continuity of educational supports in a particular field or industry from grades TK-12.

As the third-largest, non-government employer of STEM professionals, Siemens supports schools and aims to inspire the next generation of leaders to think big, explore the world, and learn to solve problems with critical thinking and collaboration.
