Student Advisory Board

The Student Advisory Board is the official advisory body for San Diego Unified School District on student-related matters. The Student Advisory Board serves to effectively represent and empower students of SDUSD by advising district leadership on the issues that directly affect the education of students.

Job Description:

  1. Find solutions to the problems brought up by students attending a SDUSD school.

  2. Present to the Board of Education, Superintendent or any other group that needs to be informed of the problems and solutions that students are looking into. 

  3. Empower students to speak up for what they believe needs to be improved in their education system. 

  4. Give advice to district leadership on issues where student input is necessary or helpful.

  5. Work with the Student Board Member in an effort to make sure that the needs of students in San Diego Unified are accurately represented. 

  6. Work in partnership with the other student and adult led organizations to achieve solutions that benefit all students. 


The Student Advisory Board is made up of students in middle and high school from across San Diego Unified School District. There are (at least) 15 members of the Student Advisory Board. Two high school students and one middle school student from every geographic sub-district are selected to serve on the Student Advisory Board.

Applying for the Student Advisory Board


A person is eligible to become a member of the Student Advisory Board of San Diego Unified by meeting the following requirements:

  • Attend a traditional middle or high school (Grades 6-12) in San Diego Unified (Charter schools not included)

  • Have at least a 2.0 weighted GPA in academics and citizenship

  • Not currently having an F in any classes

Here is the timeline for the 2020-2021 Student Advisory Board:

  • Thursday, September 3, 2020: The Student Advisory Board application becomes available to students

  • Monday, September 14, 2020: Early Application Evaluation Deadline*

  • Friday, September 18, 2020 - Final Application Deadline

  • Wednesday, September 30, 2020: Candidates will receive notification from the review committee

*Early Application Evaluation Deadline- Students who apply in the Early Application pool will have their applications evaluated beforehand and be accepted before those who apply later. Students who submit in the Early Application Evaluation Period have an increased chance of being selected.

  • This includes questions on previous leadership experience, accomplishments, and extracurricular activities

  • This includes two questions that ask you about your vision and qualifications to serve on the Student Advisory Board.

What are the expectations of being a Student Advisory Board Member?

The expectations of Student Advisory Board Members include:

  • The term of a Student Advisory Board Member shall be one traditional school year long meaning that you would serve for at least one school year. The term formally lasts until June 30, 2021.

  • Attend all meetings of the Student Advisory Board. Meeting dates are provided in advance. If an absence is necessary, communicate in advance of the meeting. 

  • Listen to the opinions of students in your school, and in your surrounding school area. Bring these ideas forward to the Student Advisory Board. 

  • Cast your vote as a member that is representing all students in the geographic sub-district.

  • Actively review the agendas of the Student Advisory Board meetings and come prepared to participate. 

  • Prioritize the success of the Student Advisory Board of San Diego Unified over other extracurriculars. This does not mean a member cannot participate in anything else. We just ask that the member is mindful of their position and responsibilities.

  • See through that the work of the Student Advisory Board remains for the students and by the students. 

Once I apply, what happens next?

Once you submit your application the review committee will evaluate your work. The review committee is made up of at least one district administrator and one student. Each application will be reviewed by multiple people. After applications are reviewed the Review Committee will meet and select the members of the Student Advisory Board. Students will be notified of their application status no later than September 30th.
