Specialized Settings

  • Parentally Placed Private School Services (PPPSS): The PPPSS program is a special education service for students enrolled in private schools. According to federal and state law, San Diego Unified School District has a policy to assist private schools in child-find activities, accept referrals from private schools and others and conduct appropriate assessments for students suspected of having a disability.   • Whittier School is a separate school option for students who are non-diploma bound in grades K-12. The students are significantly impacted by behavioral, communication, academic, sensory, and/or social needs. Whittier School provides a highly structured educational environment to assist students in acquiring academic, social, independent living, and vocational skills through alternate standards-based instruction. Only students with IEP's attend Whittier School, so opportunities for mainstreaming or access to general education peers cannot be provided. Therefore, it is critical for school site teams to implement academic modifications and accommodations, and positive behavioral supports with due diligence prior to considering placement at Whittier School. Students who attend Whittier School have received extensive interventions with minimal effectiveness, often in a number of environments. Students who are in a more restrictive placement, like a nonpublic school, may also be appropriate for Whittier School. Students are identified through the IEP process. A consultation form and associated documentation of interventions are required when considering placement at Whittier School.   • Riley School: Riley School is a nonpublic school program for students who require a more restrictive environment. Riley School is a special education center for K-8 students with serious emotional and behavior problems.   • New Dawn:The New Dawn program, located at Riley School, provides a day treatment program for students in grades 9-12 who have emotional and behavioral problems. The small school provides close monitoring, opportunities for academic success, career and vocational counseling and a therapeutic program interwoven throughout the school day.
