Bruce R. Bivins has 25 years of experience as an educator, first as a Special Education teacher and an English Language Learner Teacher, then as a lead coordinator in juvenile hall, then as an assistant principal and high school principal. From 2010-2015, he served as the principal of Roosevelt High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District, where graduation rates over doubled in the span of 5 years, and now he enters his 7th year as an Area Superintendent with San Diego Unified School District.

He holds multiple Bachelor Degrees from the University of Washington in Special Education, History, and Business Economics, and holds minors in Bilingual Education and Philosophy. He has earned his Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Western Washington University and is working on his Educational Doctorate pathway. Some of his leadership objectives include:

  • Equipping all young people with the powerful cognitive skills, social acumen and work ethics necessary for college success, career readiness, and active civic engagement.
  • Building a strong collaborative culture among staff and stakeholders to pursue innovative ideas, challenge the status quo, provide critical feedback, and be willing to step up for one another and step out of our own comfort zones.
  • Confronting institutional racism, by disrupting and dismantling systems, policies, and practices that reinforce systemic racism.
  • Building restorative communities that supports all community stakeholders having voice and agency, and builds a cohesive community centered around the success of all students.
  • Together we are Stronger!
