Below you will find information you will need to submit an application for your child for San Diego Unified School District’s part-day preschool program offered to children who are 3 and 4-year-old.

Eligibility for enrollment is determined through a ranking process with multiple factors including, age, family income and family size.

California State Preschool Age Eligibility Guidance

 If a child was born between:Pre-K Kids in class

  • December 2, 2015 and December 1, 2016
    Child is eligible to apply to TK/4 co-mingled program
  • December 2, 2016 and December 1, 2017
    Child is eligible to apply to part-day preschool program
  • September 2, 2015 and December 2, 2015
    Child is eligible to enroll in Transitional Kindergarten

If a child was born on or before:

  • September 1, 2015
    Child is eligible to enroll in Kindergarten

Children who have their third birthday on or after December 2, 2017, may be enrolled in the preschool program on or after their third birthday.

Eligibility Criteria

In order for a family to participate in the subsidized preschool program, families must meet one or more of the eligibility criteria.  Children from eligible families are able to participate in the preschool program at no cost.  Following are the eligibility criteria:

  1. Family is a current aid recipient
  2. Family is income eligible—Reference Income Guidelines
  3. Family is homeless
  4. Family has children who are recipients of child protective services, or are identified as at risk of being abused, neglected, or exploited.

Income Guidelines

Family gross income by family size must be within the state guidelines.  The income guidelines below is the maximum gross monthly income, before taxes or other deductions.  Please reference charts below:

Determining Family Size

Provide the names of all parents in the home as part of the application as well as the names and birth records for all siblings in the home who are under 18 years of age.  Please refer to list of appropriate documents for Birth Record.

Physician’s Report - Child’s Pre-admission Health Evaluation Form: English
Please print the form and take it to your child's doctor to complete. Please note that this form is required to be completed within the first 30 days of school.
Identification and Emergency Information Form: English | Spanish
This form must be provided to the classroom teacher. Please print and complete this form and take it to the teacher on your child’s first day of attendance.
Personal Rights Form: English | Spanish
This form must be provided to the classroom teacher. Please print and complete this form and take it to the teacher on your child’s first day of attendance.
Notification of Parents' Rights Form: English | Spanish
This form must be provided to the classroom teacher. Please print and complete this form and take it to the teacher on your child’s first day of attendance.

Birth Record

The birth record must indicate the child’s name, date of birth, and the relationship of the child to the parent/guardian. 

Acceptable documentation for the enrolling child and siblings includes: 

  • Birth Certificate
  • Birth Record from Hospital
  • Baptismal Record
  • School Records
  • Medical Records
  • Military Records
  • Court Orders Regarding Custody
  • Adoption Documents
  • Records of Foster Care Placement
  • County Welfare Department Records
  • Certified documentation from the U.S. Embassy that includes all family members

Proof of Income

Proof of Income must be provided for all parents in the home for the most recent 30 days.  Documentation must be consecutive and include all sources of family income.

Proof of Residence (Mail Date within Last 30 Days)

Provide current document of residency showing mail date within last 30 days.  Enrolling parent/guardian’s name must be present on the documentation.  Acceptable documentation may include but is not limited to one or a combination of the following:

  • Utility bill (i.e., SDG&E, cable/internet, water, sewer, trash)
  • Rental or lease agreement (signed within last 30 days)
  • Mortgage statement or property tax statement
  • Military housing orders

Immunizations

 Children entering preschool must have the following immunizations to start:

  3 Polio
  4 DTap
  3 Hepatitis B
  1 Varicella
  1 MMR (On or after 1st birthday)
  1 HIB (On or after 1st birthday)
