Posted on 02/03/2023

In celebration of Black History Month, students across San Diego Unified School District joined together to raise the official Black Lives Matter flag at the district’s central office, Wednesday, February 1st.

District leaders, educators, and members of the Board of Education attended the entirely student-led event signifying the district's commitment to creating a just, equitable, and empathetic world. Raising the Black Lives Matter flag is a symbol of inclusion, especially for Black students, staff, families, and communities.

"I am feeling good that Black people are being appreciated and that more people can see the Black Lives Matter flag," said Cameron Campbell, a fifth-grade student at Bird Rock Elementary.

La Jolla High School senior, Caroline Cammon said she hopes that having the flag raised at the district headquarters will make me stop and reflect on the diversity within the district.

“That we have amazing students of all races, and that we support them – that they can prosper in any way possible,” she said. “Our uniqueness is what really is making us beautiful as a district.”

On Tuesday, Jan. 24, the Board of Education adopted a resolution honoring Black History Month and recognizing the tremendous contributions made by Black Americans to the development of our culture, communities, and nation.

San Diego Unified is committed to uplifting the voices of Black students and teaching about important cultural historical events. The district’s Black History Month Resource Guide includes resources for educators, students, and families to honor and observe Black History Month.
