Stephanie’s musical roots sprouted when she was five years old and a kindergarten student at Crown Point Junior Music Academy. It was there that music teacher Stephen Luchs not only taught Stephanie how to play the violin and other instruments but also instilled that sense of love and joy in music.
“It made music seem like a part of my daily life -- part of my routine -- so I never grew up thinking that music was like an extracurricular activity or like something like that,” Stephanie said. “To me, music was just as common as going to English class or going to math class. So it made it really an important part of my lifestyle. There was just a love for music overall.”
After Luchs passed away last year, Stephanie wanted to honor his legacy and continue the positive impact he had by giving back to her former elementary school and sharing the enthusiasm for music and learning with current Crown Point students.
“There was a strong sense of discipline in his classroom, but he was also very funny and was a very good leader for a bunch of elementary schoolers,” Stephanie said. “A lot of the musical stuff that he taught me, I'm still learning today. I'll be in orchestra and realize, oh, this is a concept that Mr. Luchs taught me and I'm just starting to understand it more fully now.”
After collaborating with the violin teacher, principal, and Parent Teacher Organization at Crown Point, Stephanie decided to host a weeklong after school music education workshop. The program was a great success. Each day, thirty students participated in three interactive learning sessions, including violin instruction, music theory, ballroom dancing, and music-themed visual art, all led by Stephanie and six other Mission Bay High students, who are also Crown Point alumni.
“I think aside from a lot of music, there should be a love of music education and those who are willing to share their passion for it,” Stephanie said. “So I told all the other volunteers to not be so hung up over wrong notes or concepts that wouldn't be grasped immediately. We were able to teach using our own experiences that we had there, so the students were really interested by that, and it was really fun for us to share our experiences with them.”
With the support of the school and her fellow volunteers, Stephanie is looking forward to planning additional musical education opportunities, such as more workshops or possibly mini concert series for the Mission Bay High jazz band and chamber orchestra to play for the elementary students.

La estudiante de último año de Mission Bay High School Stephanie Zavala Lemarroy tiene un profundo amor y aprecio por la música. Ella trabaja para la orquesta de su escuela, enseña clases privadas para niños en su comunidad y está considerando un futuro en la música.
Las raíces musicales de Stephanie brotaron cuando tenía cinco años y era una amableestudiante de ergarten en Crown Point Junior Music Academy. Fue allí donde el profesor de música Stephen Luchs no solo le enseñó a Stephanie a tocar el violín y otros instrumentos, sino que también inculcó ese sentido de amor y alegría en la música.
"Hizo que la música pareciera parte de mi vida diaria, parte de mi rutina, así que nunca crecí pensando que la música era como una actividad extracurricular o algo así", dijo Stephanie. "Para mí, la música era tan común como ir a clase de inglés o ir a clase de matemáticas. Así que lo convirtió realmente en una parte importante de mi estilo de vida. Había un amor por la música en general".
Después de que Luchs falleciera el año pasado, Stephanie quería honrar su legado y continuar el impacto positivo que tuvo al regresar a su antigua escuela primaria y despertar el entusiasmo por la música y el aprendizaje con los estudiantes actuales de Crown Point.
"Había un fuerte sentido de disciplina en su salón de clases, pero también era muy divertido y era un muy buen líder para un grupo de estudiantes de primaria", dijo Stephanie. "Muchas de las cosas musicales que me enseñó, todavía las estoy aprendiendo hoy. Estaré en la orquesta y me daré cuenta, oh, este es un concepto que el Sr. Luchs me enseñó y estoy empezando a entenderlo más completamente ahora".
Después de colaborar con el maestro de violín, el director y la Organización de Padres y Maestros en Crown Point, Stephanie decidió organizar un taller de educación musical después de la escuela de una semana de duración. El programa fue un gran éxito. Cada día, los estudiantes participaron en tres sesiones de aprendizaje interactivo, que incluyeron instrucción de violín, teoría musical, bailes de salón y arte visual con temas musicales, todas dirigidas por Stephanie y otros seis estudiantes de Mission Bay High, que también son ex alumnos de Crown Point.
"Creo que, aparte de mucha música, debería haber un amor por la educación musical y aquellos que están dispuestos a compartir su pasión por ella", dijo Stephanie. "Así que les dije a todos los demás voluntarios que no estuvieran tan obsesionados con notas incorrectas o conceptos que no se captarían de inmediato. Pudimos enseñar usando nuestras propias experiencias que tuvimos allí, por lo que los estudiantes estaban realmente interesados en eso, y fue muy divertido para nosotros compartir nuestras experiencias con ellos".
Con el apoyo de la escuela y sus compañeros voluntarios, Stephanie espera planificar oportunidades adicionales de educación musical, como más talleres o posiblemente mini series de conciertos para la banda de jazz y la orquesta de cámara de Mission Bay High para tocar para los estudiantes de primaria.
